Tripura High Court Directs Speedy Conclusion of Vicky Murder Trial
The Tripura High Court has directed the trial court to take necessary steps for the early conclusion of the trial in the murder case of Durga Prasanna Deb alias Vicky, who was allegedly shot dead in Agartala in April 2024. The direction came during the hearing of a bail application filed by one of the accused, with the Court taking note of the prolonged custody of the accused and the pendency of the trial.
According to the case, Durga Prasanna Deb alias Vicky was shot at Hatipara in the Usha Bazar area on April 30, 2024. He was subsequently taken to hospital, where he was declared dead. Following the incident, a case was registered at Airport Police Station. During the investigation, the police alleged that the murder was the result of a criminal conspiracy and filed a chargesheet against several accused persons.
The accused have faced allegations under provisions relating to murder, criminal conspiracy and offences under the Arms Act. The case has witnessed several bail proceedings before the High Court. Considering the considerable period of custody and the continued pendency of the trial, the Court has emphasised that the proceedings should be taken up and concluded without unnecessary delay.
The case is pending before the competent Sessions Court in West Tripura, Agartala. The High Court’s latest direction is expected to facilitate faster progress of the proceedings. However, the allegations against the accused are yet to be established through evidence, and all accused remain presumed innocent unless and until their guilt is proved in accordance with law.
