Former Tripura High Court Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh sworn in as Supreme Court Judge
New Delhi, October 6: Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh, who previously served as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court, has been sworn in as a Judge of the Supreme Court of India.
Chief Justice of India Surya Kant administered the oath of office to Justice Singh along with Justice Sunita Agarwal and Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya at a ceremony held at the Supreme Court on Tuesday.
Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh was born on July 7, 1965. He obtained his LL.B. degree from the University of Delhi and enrolled as an advocate in 1990. He initially practised at the Patna High Court and later at the Jharkhand High Court. He was appointed an Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court in January 2012 and became a permanent judge in January 2014.
He also served as the Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court from December 20, 2022 to February 19, 2023. On April 17, 2023, he took oath as the Chief Justice of the Tripura High Court. He was subsequently transferred to the Telangana High Court, where he assumed office as Chief Justice on July 19, 2025.
His elevation to the Supreme Court follows the recommendation of the Supreme Court Collegium made on September 28, 2026. The Union government notified the appointments on October 5 after the President approved the recommendations.
With the appointment of Justice Singh and the two other judges, the working strength of the Supreme Court has increased from 34 to 37, against a sanctioned strength of 38 judges, including the Chief Justice of India.
